Description

In Mediums (2020 – 2023), the artist digitally layers found images online with his own paintings (interventions) in public spaces that may or may not still exist. Duggan states, “The artworks explore our culture of image authorship, memory perception, and online/offline presence. Printed on plexiglass sheets, these modified images are overlaid with enamel paintings that ground the work and give it a presence in our reality.”

Duggan’s fascination with biomorphic forms was influenced by his father’s stories about his experience as a ‘ghostbuster’. Duggan captures these ‘ghosts’ within imaginary spaces rooted in the concept of in-between states. Duggan’s works in Neverwhere appear as portals to another dimension revealing unseen connections and uncanny realms. Found images online add a familiar quality that is rendered unfamiliar and creates a sense of otherworldliness allowing clashing perspectives to coexist. The works tap into the common desire to explore an alternate reality. The merging of imagery in the artworks signifies the coexistence of non-linear timelines and evokes a sense of romanticism associated with the act of escaping to and from these realms.
