Introduction
Artist Phan Anh and the Dogma Prize invite you to the opening of his solo exhibition Museum Of the Mind.
This half-real-half-fictional museum presents the artist’s personal archive of the memories from his late grandmother. Found objects or artifacts (collective memories) are metamorphosed (into personal memories) to reflect the identities of two individuals whose beliefs/ ideologies are influenced by differing geographical and historical contexts - in which, the mind and compassion of the humankind are the shared heirloom being inherited and continued. The repetition of images and human behaviors are intentionally observed, documented, and reconstructed, not only to replicate history, but also to pose questions or, in a way, re-identify the given objects and phenomena.
Museum Of the Mind happens in a residential space that has lost its function – a space in which the artists and his companions have reconditioned in an attempt to challenge the definition of a museum per se. With regard to the artist’s current practice, the act of reinventing existing artifacts and structures is also considered a process, in which new media for his personal archive are formed - an archival practice that suggests various questions on identities and functions of objective matters, as well as contemplation on societal faith in such ‘apparent’ objectivity.
This exhibition is curated by Tuong Linh Do and Phan Anh.
