Description

In Never-never land, Châu delves into the intersection of reality and absurd imagination, constructing fragments that allude to an endless narrative about the human experience. By removing images from their original contexts, each of The Extracts (akin to a visual diary) juxtaposes colours and textures to create a dream-like sense of confusion. Each painting conveys anxiety and unfulfillment, emphasising a pervasive feeling of emptiness. Châu states, “I created these 12 paintings a long time ago, prior to the Covid pandemic. While the works may not explicitly reflect a specific time, as of today in 2023, some things have ceased while others persist. Within this realm of The Extracts, there are elements that are perfect in their own essence and others that refuse to change or grow. I named this body of work Never-never land partially in response to the exhibition’s title Neverwhere, and also because I perceive the real world, described as “a country full of joy” in Braille, to be akin to the imaginary land of Peter Pan.”
